For our project this semester we have to make a TVC commercial advertising an imaginary item.Think about anything you could ever want! The item we are trying to advertise should be appealing to a specific audience. We are tasked with making a 30 second animated advertisement, make a company logo animation and design a poster as well.
This blog is dedicated to my process of coming up with ideas and sketches as well as showcasing where i draw my inspiration from
I have uploaded my final animation below which is whatever I could get done before the school locked down. I managed to finish lining most of the scenes except for the last 3, and decided to colour and render one scene to give a rough idea of how my animation should look
Coloured and rendered scene where Steve introduces the gloves
I hope to be able to finish my animation at some point, whenever possible
Hello! I updated my poster and made some composition changes. After consulting with two of our lecturers I changed the size and placement of all the elements in the poster so it is easier for the eyes to move around the piece and allows more focus on the actual product and product/company name
Hello all! So sorry it took me so long to upload my animatic, i was trying to clean up more after receiving feedback from teachers and peers.
Is the story animatic easy to comprehend? Do let me know your thoughts in the comments! 🙂
TVC Poster
Here is my fully rendered poster, I may change some elements if told to do so after consultation with Alan. What are your views on the poster? What catches your eyes first? Is there anything missing? Please let me know your input in the comments! 🙂
I drafted out 4 different poster thumbnails and I have not settled on which design I am going for yet, I am leaning more to design number 2 because i like the overall composition and i think it has good focus towards the gloves themselves.
Poster references
I looked up some 90’s poster references for marketing products for youths, I tried to take some inspiration from the placement and composition of image and text.
Please give comments on which design looks the best and what improvements can be made as well as the elements are best to keep! 🙂
Updated thumbnails
Hello I have made an update to my thumbnails after receiving feedback from comments and from my teacher. I have made a 5th thumbnail to change some elements from design number 2, as that was the most favoured choice from the 4. I made changes to the background in terms of elements and perspective, I removed any trees and decided to have my second character run with her retrieved kite in the background!
When looking for references I took inspiration from kid-targeted products like candy and toy packaging and tried to implement it to my glove product. I referenced real-life gloves, mainly rubber gloves as that is how i imagine my product to look, a bit glossy and colourful looking, packaged like a candy glove product meant for kids.
Product packaging Design
I played around with the different types of packaging like plastic, cardboard and hard plastic and gacha toy capsules. I decided to go for the plastic candy wrapper looking packaging because I wanted the product to be easy to open and I wanted the product to also look and feel as though it were made of gummy candy
TCV Ident
I uploaded my enlisted video to YouTube for viewing on this blog
Here is my colour script guide based on my storyboard.
I wanted the beginning to be more dramatic so i made the colours more intense and i took away the blue from the sky, so there is a clearer sense of problem in scenes 1 and 2 as compared to when Steve brings out his gloves from scene 3 onward which brings the solution. The colours are still vibrant but less intense and have more blue to give a sense of calmness and happiness/Joy until the end which shows the credits to the product colour scheme
Background research exploration
I got some feedback from Karen to change the way my background looked, she mentioned that there was not enough shape harmony in my background design, so I changed my trees and shrubs from a very organic messy style to a more geometric round style to suit the shapes of my characters. I feel that it looks much better than the previous design as there is more depth in the frame and i find it easier for my eyes to move around the frame
Set Design pack
I was also tasked to make a “set design pack” to include more exploration on the placements of shrubs and greenery in my background. I made a layout map of my environment setting as my location is taking place outside instead of an indoor setting. I also included a lighting guide for exploring what time of the day i want my story to take place
I always have fun when it comes to doing dynamic poses, its one of my favourite part of project treatment as I get to see my character in action and put them in different scenarios!
For this I referenced the big actions in my storyboards and wanted to play around different uses of the gloves for his expressions like when he is sad or excited
When thinking about my product I thought about what kind of character would be perfect to sell my idea. My first thought was to do something inspired by 90’s american cartoons and commercials, how colourful and fun they were. I thought of cereal commercials and toy commercials, and my first initial idea was to have my product based on gummy candy.
I decided my character had to be a young charismatic boy, and i wanted my product to be fun and useful for kids/families. I wanted my protagonist to be a cheerful and youthful boy who is also a problem solver
When looking for references i already had something in mind. I wanted my background to be at a park clearing, with a big field and trees around. I wanted there to be a lot of green and i wanted the scene to look nice and warm, like a perfect clear day in a children’s book. As I was doing my character colour scripts i also kept in mind that there was going to be alot of green in the scene, so i wanted to give my characters more primary colours to stand out from the background.
Note: The characters I put into the background are not accurate in sizing, but placed there for colour referencing
